The good news is that the Swedish are continuing to buy houses in Spain. Although the British share of the market may have fallen, there is interest sprouting and growing in other parts of the world.
Between 2008 and 2010 the number of Swedish buyers in Spain increased by 138%. An increase that is reportedly continuing with one Swedish estate agent describing how visits to the southern coast have increased by 22% in the last quarter of 2012.
It’s not hard to understand what the attractions of Spain might be for the Swedish buyer. The differences in climate, the amount of daylight and the Swedish love of a good value purchase mean that properties in Spain continue to be sought after.
Oscar Paoli, is one of Ábaco’s Swedish conveyancing experts, ‘Our Swedish purchasers are often in the 50-55 age group and they are looking for a holiday home during their final working years and retirement. Two-bedroomed properties with a patio are proving to be particularly popular. Ideally something that isn’t too isolated and is in good order.’
Areas where there is already a strong Swedish community are particularly sought after, ‘As with most nationalities, they prefer to be based in a location where they can communicate easily.’ Of course, the majority of Swedish people speak good English too.
Unlike the UK, Sweden has suffered less from the recession and there are still plenty of people with money to spend on a home somewhere sunny. The discount prices available are attractive to them and they recognise just how much more property their money will buy in Spain compared to some other countries.
