Your guide to becoming an expat in Spain

Spain remains one of the most desired locations for retirement in Europe. It’s understandable – beautiful weather for most of the year, a laid-back pace of life in many areas, the friendliness of local people and the variety of dining out options. It’s also one of the healthiest places to live and it’s easy to see why. In this article we look at the process you might go through from taking the decision to move to finding your ideal place, purchasing or renting your property and the ways in which you can obtain residency:

We are often asked for the ballpark figure for additional expenses if you want to purchase a property in Spain. It is very difficult to give, as much depends upon where you are buying and, of course, what it is. In this article we give you an approximate idea of what the additional costs may be. It’s also important to have an idea of how much it will cost you to maintain your property over the long term:

Whilst we’re talking about cost, regional variation is important to take into account. In this article we consider whereabouts in Spain you are likely to get the best deal and the type of property that is likely to be most affordable. Your guide to Albir
Your guide to Albir

This time, David Ruiz introduces us to the town of Albir, on the Costa Blanca. With a fantastic coastline and a laid-back atmosphere, Albir has attracted many international residents over the years. It’s only 14 minutes from Benidorm but without the hustle and bustle and with its own identity, including the Sierra Helada National Park.
Definitely worth a visit and maybe your choice of location for a property in Spain:

Just a little reminder that the local vehicle taxes are due before the 10th May in Torrevieja and some other local towns. You can pay these taxes online:

The site translates into English and is user friendly. If you pass the voluntary payment date then you will have to go into the offices to make the payment which is not as easy.
Election time
Election time

Local elections will be held in Spain on May 28th and you can vote in the local, but not national, elections if you are from a country in the EU or a country that has an agreement with Spain that allows you to do this. The UK, does have such an agreement so in spite of Brexit you can go ahead and vote provided you are registered to do so.

In order to qualify you must have been resident in Spain for at least 3 years. Have a residency card and be registered on the padrón (the electoral roll). If you are not already registered then you will have missed the window for applying.

You can find out more about the municipal elections and how to find out whether you are registered to vote:

The hidden costs of airlines
The hidden costs of airlines

We’ve known for a long time that it’s not just about the stated air fare when it comes to booking flights. The process can involve a long list of ‘added extras’ which end up with the total cost of the flight being much more than that initially advertised. Now, TradingPedia has done some research into which flight operators are the worst offenders. Read about it here on Murcia Today:

Or, in this case, a long time. We might often wish to have a bit of peace and quiet but who would choose to spend 500 days in self-inflicted isolation? That’s what Beatriz Flamini chose to do as part of a research study that will lead into a documentary. Beatriz had been holed up in a cave in Motril in the province of Granada. During her time in the cave she had no time references, news or contact with the outside world:

The religious layers of Spain

If you have spent any time sightseeing in Spain’s major cities then you will have become aware of the intertwined history of Islam, Judaism and Christianity that exists here. Of course, not always harmonious by any means, but the three religions are marked across Spain by its network of religious buildings – which have often been built on the same site or even transformed from one religion to another.

In this article in El País we can read about the Jewish architecture that is still being uncovered and discovered in Spain’s town, cities and even villages:

Controversial – Picasso
Controversial – Picasso

It’s 50 years since the death of Pablo Picasso and, in keeping with the man himself, there is plenty of controversy surrounding it. Alongside Picasso’s strong political views he was also a man of his age but should we reject artwork on the basis of the activities of its creator?

It is becoming an increasingly contentious issue as there are few artists who have not got some skeletons in their closet. Whatever your views, if you want to find out more about Picasso the Guardian invites you to mark the anniversary by travelling to seven significant places in Spain:
