Time to think about resident taxes

We know it’s not everyone’s favourite subject, but we are approaching the deadline for Modelo 720 and it won’t be long before it will be time for resident declarations commencing in April.

There are allowances that you can claim for and everyone is allowed a basic personal allowance. Our article ‘What Spanish taxes must residents pay?’ provides more information about income tax and IBI payments for residents:

Civil partnership advice

If you’re not married but you have a partner then you might be interested in reading the following article. There are advantages for people who live together to register themselves as being a de facto couple. There are a number of benefits including taxation, accessibility to pensions and rights of representation.

For more information you should read our article "Register your civil partnership":

A star is born

Well, not exactly, but we are rather proud of Caroline’s video on buying in Spain safely.

If you are thinking of buying a Spanish property then this is a good way of finding out what the process consists of. Caroline has helped thousands of people buy a property in Spain over the years. In this video she takes us through the six steps that you need to be aware of if you are thinking of purchasing here:

See you in Manchester!

If you haven't yet found your "place in the sun" why not visit the A Place in the Sun Live exhibition at the Manchester Central Convention Complex (G-MEX) 15-17 March.
Ábaco will be there (stand F33) to help you make a start with your plans to own a home in Spain.

If you prefer face-to-face answers to your questions this could be a great opportunity to meet our legal advisers in the flesh.
If you would like free tickets to the exhibition please contact Caroline by email at ccl@abacoadvisers.com.

We are looking forward to meeting you.

Lots on Brexit

Coming so close to the deadline and with no deal in sight, it’s not surprising that there is lots out there about what might and might not happen in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

We’ve rounded up some of the articles that may be of interest, keeping in mind that the situation changes daily. Whatever you read, check the date of publication – it may already have been replaced by some more recent news.

Murcia Today – pension update:

Reassuring pensions news from the UK government regarding possible no-deal Brexit

You can follow the latest Brexit news by liking the Facebook page ‘Brits in Spain’. They’ve been advertising their different outreach events in various parts of the country.

Following a recent live Q and A a number of questions were answered online. Although these refer to specific situations and individuals you might find something that reflects your own circumstances:

What won’t be out of date and has continued to be mentioned all along is the importance of making yourself legal in Spain before the deadline. This includes obtaining your residency, obtaining a Spanish driving licence and registering yourself on the padrón.
Processionaries on the march again

It’s the time of year when the processionary caterpillar is causing concern amongst pet owners. The caterpillar hairs are particularly toxic to dogs and other pets who can experience an allergic reaction that can make their tongue swell and cause them difficulty in breathing.

Many people feel that sightings of this caterpillar seem to be getting earlier and earlier each year. This can make it very difficult for local councils to take precautionary measures at exactly the right time. Local forums will often post information about the latest sightings, and it is worth registering just to keep up-to-date.

More good health news

Spain is frequently in the headlines when it comes to the health of its people. Now it has nosed above the others to be announced by Bloomberg as the healthiest country in the world.

It went up from sixth position in 2017 to 1st in 2019 and the Mediterranean diet and Spanish health service, are being given as the reason.

Read about it in El País:

Spain is the world’s healthiest nation, according to Bloomberg index

To read what Bloomberg has to say:

Carnaval!

Carnivals or ‘carnavales’ have been celebrated in different parts of Spain this month. It might seem a little cold to be donning the body stocking and putting on the heels, but February is the traditional month to join in with carnival celebrations.

Torrevieja was no exception. Thirty ‘comparsas’ or dance groups came together for a wonderful, colourful display to brighten up the streets. It was a terrific show that included anything and everything from the more traditional plumes and sequins to the slightly more unusual flying flamingos on their roller skates.

There were eight children’s comparsas as well as dance schools and individuals who showed enormous creativity and attention to detail. If you weren’t able to come and watch you might like to take a look at this videos that has been shared. And maybe next year, you can come along too:

You can watch snippets from the carnival on YouTube:

Benidorm Palace

16 million customers and 3,500 shows in 42 years. It’s quite a record for Benidorm Palace which remains one of the best known cabaret venues in Spain. But did you know it’s also a family business? This isn’t part of a chain of halls but a very special one that belongs to Vicente Climent.

In this article, Think Spain tells us a little more about it:

Benidorm Palace: 16 million customers and 3,500 shows in 42 years

Get ready for the quantum computer

And it’s being brought to you by a Spanish man. Admittedly he has lived in California for rather a long time, but he was born in Murcia and so we felt he deserved a little shout from us:

It’s warming up!

It might only be February/ March time but the temperatures are already rising and people are out on the beaches, if not perhaps in the sea. It’s at these times of year when you really appreciate waking up to blue skies. If you’re planning on coming over soon you might want to check out the weather on one of our favourite Spanish weather sites:

Want to know more about food and wine in Spain?

This Food Glossary takes you through from ‘aceite de oliva’ to ‘zurito’ which apparently is a glass of beer drunk as an aperitif in the Basque Country. You can even click on the arrow to hear the word spoken and practise you pronunciation.

It just gives you a brief definition of the word but would be very good to sharpen up your knowledge of Spanish menus:
