The growing popularity of Spanish
It's not just those with property in Spain who see a reason for learning the language. The two traditional foreign languages of the British classroom have been overtaken by Spanish according to some recent statistics.

Moors and Christians are doing the rounds
It's coming up to the Moors and Christians processions in many towns and cities across Spain. This traditional annual event recognises the clashes between these two cultures in Spain's past. The processions are complete with elaborate dress and sometimes acrobatics and other forms of entertainment in between the rows of marching participants. If you want a good view you will need to get there early, but, be warned. The processions can go on for a long time and afterwards that's when the summer parties really start. You will need to check out your local fiesta calendar but here are a few that we are aware of that are due to take place in the next few weeks: - Denia from the 13th to 16th August
- Elche from the 7th to 11th August
- Almoradi from the 26th July to 4th August

Not more baby sharks?
If you're a mum to young children or even a grandparent, you might already be familiar with the song ‘Baby shark' that seems to be sung by every child under the age of six. If so, you'll be relieved to hear that this link is nothing to do with the song but is an attempt to breed spotted catsharks and release them into the waters off Cartagena:

Spanish baby names
If you're looking for a baby name with a Spanish influence then you have 25 to choose from here. ‘The most popular Spanish Baby names for 2019' provides an interesting list including how the name should be pronounced and what it means.
Some of these you will already be familiar with such as Diego, Mateo, Miguel but others you might not have heard of such as Savannah, Ramona and Dante. Whether you are expecting or know someone who is, this list might just help the naming process:

Keep in touch about Brexit
As October isn't too far away, British people might want to check in with the Brits in Spain Facebook page. On here you will find useful advice about travelling to and living in Spain but also bulletins about the latest Brexit advice and information about opportunities to find out more. The page is regularly updated and includes a range of information linked to Brexit such as pet travel if the UK leaves without a deal.

Support in Spain
This website is aimed at British nationals and other foreign residents who are over the age of 50 and might need extra help and advice. It's a signposting website that includes details of official Spanish government and non-government organisations as well as some that are in the voluntary sector.
You can either search for the support required or enter the name of your town to find out what is available there. Unfortunately some towns do not appear to be listed and the fact that the website was developed with the help of the British Consulate in the south of Spain does mean there is a leaning towards more information in this area.
The idea is an excellent one and it's hoped that it becomes more widespread in its reach in time:

Home improvement grants
Money Saver Spain has published an interesting article and information about grants that are available for some specific home improvements. You can apply for a subsidy for building work that is aimed at increasing energy efficiency on a permanent residency in Spain.
If you are thinking about installing insulation, new windows, making electrical improvements, heating, air conditioning or sound proofing, this could be something worth investigating:
