THE WORD ON THE STREET
News and information from Spain
International Edition - June 2019
Welcome to the June issue of 'The Word on the Street'. This is your monthly news and information from Spain provided by Ábaco Advisers. We hope to keep you in touch with the news, events and just a little bit of gossip.
Power of attorney

Find out more about power of attorney and how this useful option can enable you to carry out a whole range of legal activities in Spain without having to do it yourself or even be in the country.

In this YouTube video, Gema Sánchez from our Legal Department explains how to deal correctly with legal documentation issued in other countries. She also explains about a legal translation and the role of the official sworn translator.

Buying and selling advice

Are you thinking of buying or selling your property in Spain? If so, you might be looking for advice about what you need to do. In this article we explain how we are happy to give some free advice with our no charge conveyancing consultation.

We provide a number of different ways in which you can talk to us about the process and what’s involved, according to what suits you best:

Taking control of your inheritance

In this article we explain what you need to know about the inheritance process in Spain. We often come across cases where lack of information shared between inheritors has resulted in misunderstandings.

Ábaco can help you not only be informed yourself but make sure that those who will be responsable for your estate after your death know what they have to do. It’s a difficult subject but one that shouldn’t be avoided.

Register your partnership

If you are not married but live together then you might be interested in registering as a de facto couple. Doing this means that you can share some of the benefits without actually going through the ceremony.

In this article we explain what the criteria is for registration, how to go about it and what the benefits can be:

Spanish residency rules

Obtaining residency in Spain has never been more important if you are intending to live here. In the past there might have been people who managed to escape with the mínimum of paper work to their name. Now, this is no longer the case and the criteria for staying in the country is getting tougher all the time.

In this article David Ruiz, a registered profesional relocation adviser, makes clear how important it is to get residency and also how different the application process can be depending upon where you live. He has had years of experience of dealing with resident applications and provides his advice to those seeking residency now:

Taking on the pharmaceutical big boys

We all know that pharmaceutical companies have the say when it comes to the price they set for their products. Now associations in Spain are campaigning for a fairer process that enables medicines to be bought at a reasonable cost without wiping out the pharmaceutical companies’ profits.

It’s a bold move but one that must surely be long overdue. But can the drug companies be made to adopt a more ethical approach? This article also touches on the conflict of interests that professionals can be exposed to when it comes to which brand they prescribe:

Spanish grandmothers make us think

A group of Spanish grandmothers from Madrid are challenging the influence that some iconic photos of men have had over the years. A series of photos has been published of the women in which they replace the men they originally featured.

The group entitled the Lideresas of Villaverde (Female leaders of Villaverde) is comprised of women over the age of 65 and they pose as The Beatles, Leonid Brezhnev, Steve Jobs and Hugh Hefner. It’s an interesting experiment that highlights just how much the images that dominate reflect the experiences of men and not women. Perhaps this could be a new trend in photoshoots?

PhotoEspaña

Continuing with the photo theme The Guardian has published examples from Madrid’s annual celebration of photography. The photos aren’t just of Spain but have a distinctly European theme and include exhibitions from further afield too.

Most of the photos are designed to make you think and tackle some tough subjects:

It’s hot, hot, hot

It’s going to be warm across Europe as we enter the month of July and Spain is set to experience scorching temperaturas with some areas reaching over 40C. However, there are ways and means of keeping cool here and managing the heat.

In this article from The Local we’re given some useful dos and don’ts to help us ride out the latest heatwave:

Take a siesta: The official dos and don'ts to survive a heatwave in Spain
Solar energy is popular again

Why isn’t there more solar energy use in Spain, in a country with so many days of sunshine? That’s a question that many people have asked over the years. However, a series of prohibitive regulations has meant that the solar alternative was not feasible for many people, until now that is.

New regulations approved in April have meant that interest in installing solar energy is seeing an all-time high. Small and medium-sized companies in particular are looking to invest in solar panels and it is expected that this trend could be seen amongst individual home owners too:

The story of Ibiza – told differently

It’s hard to believe that Norman Cook is 55 years old. Norman Cook, otherwise known as Fatboy Slim, is a famous DJ and has now been involved in the production of a new film about Ibiza. What is perhaps particularly unusual about the film is that there is no speaking in it, only music.

The film, directed by Julien Temple, is a history of the island against the backdrop of a Fatboy Slim soundtrack and is set to premier at Glastonbury:
Spain is on the move

For most of the year Spain’s main roads are quiet and many motorways (especially those you pay for) almost deserted. When it comes to July and August, however, it’s a different story. In this news update from Think Spain we are reminded that holiday season is upon us. The article also reminds us that the police will be on the look out for those breaking Spain’s traffic laws:

Boy heralded as hero

It’s good to have some positive news to report. In this article from Murcia Today we are told about a successful rescue that took place thanks to the sharp wits of a ten year old:

The Queen and the King pose together

On Monday 17th June King Felipe VI of Spain was in Windsor Castle being sworn in as Knight of the Garter by Queen Elilzabeth II. In the picture shown here what’s perhaps most striking is how small the British Queen looks in comparison to her Spanish equivalent. Of course, she is 93 after all:
