Home improvements – new law

If you have had some home improvements done to your property in Spain, or even if you are thinking about it, you should read our article in Spain Explained. A new law means that the amnesty that used to be applied after a period of time will no longer cover some properties.

You may not be aware that almost all changes made to your home require approval from the town hall. Failing to have the correct licences in place can lead to fines being imposed or even the requirement that you return your property to its original state. Don’t get caught out:

Buying property in Spain? Our advice

Many people dream of owning a property in Spain. This might be for a holiday home or perhaps a permanent one when they retire. Having a house in the sun and enjoying the Spanish food, culture and lifestyle is an attractive proposition.

How do you do it safely and what does it entail? Our guide to buying property in Spain explains about NIEs and the power of attorney. We outline what you need to know about the private contract and what’s involved in signing the title deed.

For this and more information read our article:

Residents – it’s Spanish taxes time

If you are a resident living in Spain then there are different taxes you must pay. Along with IBI or council tax, you may be liable to paying income tax in Spain too.

The majority of residents are required to complete a resident tax declaration annually, before the end of June. On this declaration you must declare your world-wide income including any rental income, interest from savings, income from the sale of a house or any other asset.

Worried about healthcare in Spain?

One of the most burning issues for many people who’ve moved to Spain from another country is what healthcare they are entitled to and how they can access it.

In this article David Ruiz explains about the difference between a temporary and permanent health card and how important it is that you ensure you have arranged the health care you need, not just for now, but for what might happen in the future:

Healthcare in Spain: How to protect your health
Bremainers protest in Madrid

In sympathy with the British protesters in London, people were out on the streets in Madrid on Saturday 23rd March to show their opposition to Brexit. Around 400 people are believed to have come out in protest, ironically in the Plaza Margaret Thatcher.

The crowd were made up of people of different ages and representing different interests but all were unanimous in their wish to stay within the EU. El País in English reports:

A knife with another purpose

With concern mounting over the number of knife crimes in some cities around the world, it’s no wonder that there was more than a little anxiety caused by the sight of someone brandishing a knife on the metro train in Madrid.

However, it turned out that the young man was only sharpening the large carving knife that he uses as a profesional ham cutter. Whether he should have been doing this on the tube is another matter and, as this article explains, he may still face charges:

If you didn’t go to the Fallas...

...then you might want to take a look at what you missed. These are some of the most memorable efigies from this famous Valencian fiesta renowned for its noise, colour and atmosphere.

The Best Fallas Monuments of 2019

Each one is created in such detail that it seems a shame that they should go up in smoke each year. However, one is given a reprieve and voted as the favourite to be saved and stored.

To find out the history of this popular festival you can read our article from Spain Explained:

Ear-splitting, head-thumping - it's Las Fallas!

And, of course, if you didn’t make it this year you might want to reserve your hotel room now.
Do you have a mortgage in Spain?

If you do, you might be wondering if it’s worth paying it off at a quicker rate than you need to. In this article from Money Saver Spain they explain about mortgage overpayments and ways in which you can calculate the best option for you:

My Fair Lady

If you enjoy a good musical then you might be interested in booking your seat to watch Javea Players’ version of My Fair Lady. They will be performing this famous musical in Rojales at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday April 13th and tickets are now available for the show.

The curtain goes up at 7pm and you can even pick your seat from the website. To find out more:

Which mobile phone company?

It can feel as though the mobile phone companies are very quick to catch your business but less enthusiastic about looking after you once they have. Now it’s The Local who give us a breakdown of what their readers think of the different providers and what their strengths and weaknesses might be:
This is for royal watchers

If you’re interested in the comings and goings of royalty then you might like to take a look at this article from Think Spain. Sarah Ferguson has been talking to a Spanish reporter about her relationship with Princess Diana.

In it she also touches on her own problems with her weight, something that has led her to support charities dealing with the issue:

Sarah Ferguson talks to Spanish reporter: “Lady Diana was my sister and best friend”
What to do about the blue crab

Spain seems to suffer quite a lot from invasive species. Whether they’re plants or animals that have found their way to Spanish shores, they seem to do well here and force out some of the native species.

In this article by the Guardian we hear about the blue crab which has made an entrance into Spanish waters, to the detriment of the native varieties. With extermination not an option perhaps it’s up to us to make sure that we help out the local fishermen and put crab on the table:
