It’s time to think about inheritance

It’s a difficult subject but with so much time on our hands, many people have been asking us questions about the best way of dealing with inheritance issues and what they should do next. We’ve put together these articles to help answer your questions. Although every enquiry is different, there are some general guidelines that we can offer for those who are not familiar with the Spanish system.
Understanding the Spanish inheritance process
Understanding the inheritance process in Spain

Not every country follows the same procedures once someone dies. For example, in Spain there is no automatic transfer of property, even between spouses. Because of this and other differences that there are, it’s important that you take advice and alert your inheritors to what they can expect. In this article we outline what the Spanish inheritance process is and offer a personalised assessment to help you clarify the implications for you and your family:

Inheritance tax in Spain - advice for inheritors
Inheritance tax in Spain

One of the main concerns that people have is just how much inheritance tax there will be to pay on a property they inherit and when this must be paid. In this article we explain the process from the point of view of the person inheriting property. We refer to five steps that you should take irrespective of what your long term intentions are for the property:

Making a resident tax declaration in Spain
Residen tax declarations

It’s that time of year again. The majority of residents in Spain must present an annual
tax declaration before 30 th June. For most residents this is a Spanish tax law
requirement. It can also be beneficial as it provides evidence of your income and you
can use it to prove your fiscal residency.
In this article we explain what the requirements are, who should make one and why:
Spanish tax forms foreigners need to complete to avoid penalties
Time’s ticking on the 720 deadline

Do you need to amend your 720 asset declaration form? Are you newly arrived in
Spain and need to make one? Either way, time is running out as the deadline for this
is March 31 st . If you are now likely to miss it you can still submit it late with a minimal
amount of penalty. Much less than if you choose not to declare your assets at all and
are found out by the authorities.
This article explains about the Modelo 720 along with some other very important
forms that you need to complete:
In this article we outline who must compete the form and the reasons why you might
need to update yours:

Women were in charge in Murcia?

Not at the moment perhaps, but a burial site found in Murcia suggests that women
may have had the dominating role. The remains show that women seemed to have
more than their share of the wealth and status, leading to speculation that they were
in fact in charge. It might be guess work but it’s an interesting thought:

Capa’s image from the Spanish civil war helps tenants find new life, 85 years on
An unusual success for photo journalism

A photo can become a priceless historical record. The picture of 10 Peironcely Street
was taken towards the end of 1936 and shows children playing happily in front their
house, badly damaged by bombs dropped on Madrid. Now, the families still living in
the flats have been rehoused and this epic building will become a cultural centre
rather than a squalid tenement block.

As the rehoused tenants point out, had it not been for the photographer Robert
Capa, would they ever have been noticed at all?:

More photos that tell a tale

Another photographer who has captured the spirit, despair, determination and
poverty surrounding the civil war in Spain is Antoni Campañà. A new exhibition at the
National Museum of Art of Catalonia is now displaying pictures from everyday life
during the war years.

You can read this Guardian article about the photos here:
