Time’s ticking on the 720 deadline

Do you need to amend your 720 asset declaration form? Are you newly arrived in
Spain and need to make one? Either way, time is running out as the deadline for this
is March 31 st . If you are now likely to miss it you can still submit it late with a minimal
amount of penalty. Much less than if you choose not to declare your assets at all and
are found out by the authorities.

During the early months of lockdown we provided a weekly bulletin of what Stuart of
Spain Speaks has to say about the crisis. We haven’t mentioned him recently but he
is still producing regular updates of the situation in Spain for English speakers. This
is Spain update day 379 in which he talks about the border restrictions and ‘partying’

Books about Spain

Spain in English has just launched a page on which it intends to review and report on
books about Spain including fiction and non-fiction. The first book they cover is ‘The
Crinkle Crankle Wall: Our First Year in Andalusia’ and you can read an extract from
the book to decide whether it’s one for you. They also invite you to submit your own
recommendations and/ or reviews:

Not at the moment perhaps, but a burial site found in Murcia suggests that women
may have had the dominating role. The remains show that women seemed to have
more than their share of the wealth and status, leading to speculation that they were
in fact in charge. It might be guess work but it’s an interesting thought:

If you enjoy a good book but don’t want to spend too much on your hobby then you
might be interested in this article from Money Saver Spain. They provide 13
suggestions for how you can get hold of a good read without having to pay for it:

A photo can become a priceless historical record. The picture of 10 Peironcely Street
was taken towards the end of 1936 and shows children playing happily in front their
house, badly damaged by bombs dropped on Madrid. Now, the families still living in
the flats have been rehoused and this epic building will become a cultural centre
rather than a squalid tenement block.

As the rehoused tenants point out, had it not been for the photographer Robert
Capa, would they ever have been noticed at all?:

Another photographer who has captured the spirit, despair, determination and
poverty surrounding the civil war in Spain is Antoni Campañà. A new exhibition at the
National Museum of Art of Catalonia is now displaying pictures from everyday life
during the war years.

The Local provides us with ten Spanish phrases that make reference to water or
‘agua’. Some useful expressions to throw into your everyday Spanish:

If you are fed up of the commission you are charged when making an international
purchase, then you might want to take a look at this article, again in Money Saver
Spain. They explain what the advantages of a multi-currency card can be when you
are making a purchase in a different currency. They also dispel some of the fears
you might have of using one of these. Worth taking a look to see if you might benefit:
