It’s time to file your Modelo 720 form in Spain
Deadline for 720

The deadline for presenting or amending the Modelo 720 (asset declaration form) is now upon us. If you are not sure whether you need to make any alterations to yours as your situation has changed or you have not made one yet, then read our article:

As it points out, if you haven’t made a declaration before but think maybe you should it is far better to declare now than to be found out. We will be happy to advise if you contact our offices.
Extension of donation tax reductions
Thinking of donating?

There are many advantages to taking the decision to donate your property rather than waiting until it’s transferred through inheritance. The process is simpler, you are there to oversee it and now some particularly favourable tax terms have been extended to more people. Depending on your relationship to those you donate to, you might now be able to benefit. From 1st January, group III, including uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and stepchildren, will be included in the favourable tax bracket.

Read the article to find out how this might be beneficial for you and those you care about:
Completing the adventure – getting married in Spain
It’s time for some good news

We love a wedding at Ábaco, so we were delighted to be able to help organise the wedding of Mark and Clive at the notary office in Torrevieja. Not only that, but it was wonderful to hear that they found out about the possibility from our very own ‘The Word on the Street’.

It’s nice to know that the information we put out there is read and even acted upon! So, from The Word on the Street team, congratulations to the happy couple:

Introducing Alcoy

In this article David Ruiz introduces us to the town of Alcoy, situated just north of Alicante. This is an inland town that dates back to the 6
th century BC. It is steeped in history with cave paintings, a 16th century convent and lots of bridges. Some of the best tapas come from here and the Serpis olives that grow here are renowned. To find out more about this intriguing part of Spain and what it might be like to live there:

Researchers in Valencia pinpoint unwritten rules of paella
What! No seafood?

If you like to try your hand at cooking paella then you may have thrown in a few prawns or shellfish at one time or another. Of course, Jamie Oliver hit the headlines when he added chorizo and there are those who like to mix in a handful of peas. According to this article these are all forbidden ingredients if you want to create an authentic Valencian paella:

However, even the rules surrounding paella are made to be broken. So don’t let this deter you from finding your own favourite combination.
Rain, rain go away!

If you have been over for a holiday in Spain during the past two weeks then I can only apologise. Rain here is relatively rare, certainly when compared to many European countries. When it does rain it’s usually hard and fast and then blue sky follows, quickly drying your patio.

If you are interested in the usual weather patterns across Spain then you might take a look at this article:

The real story behind the Disney hit movie ‘Encanto’
The ‘Encanto’ story

This article in El País in English gives us fascinating insight into how the Oscar winning film ‘Encanto’ came to be and the research that went into it. Not every piece of news form this year’s Oscars is good, so it’s refreshing to find out how much effort went into the making of this film and the focus on authenticity that inspired it:

Valencia’s famous festival of Las Fallas is back with a bang
Fallas highlights

If you weren’t fortunate enough to visit the Fallas festival in Valencia this year, then you might be interested in looking at the highlights. As usual, there was a mixture of fascinating ‘ninots’ or paper-mache sculptures, some including reference to Brexit.

Your plans for Easter

It’s spring! Although you wouldn’t have thought it with the amount of rain we’ve been having recently. Next on the calendar are the religious festivals of Easter or Semana Santa, in Spain. This is a very important time of year here where you can see the traditional processions spread over a week in most towns and cities and even villages.

You can find out more about the schedule from the Eurotourguide site. They have details currently of the Easter Parades in Cartagena, Santa Pola, Alicante and Pilar de la Horadada:

Looking for help?

It’s been a difficult couple of years and many people have found the need to turn to different organisations for help and support for many different reasons. Below we have included some of the organisations that are available to provide advice, support and sometimes practical assistance, to foreigners living in Spain. These are just a sample:

Age in Spain

Age in Spain is a charity dedicated to the welfare of English-speaking older people. Their website includes a lot of information including a range of guides about different aspects of applying for residency, healthcare for residents and frequent visitors, benefits, driving and many other issues that can be confusing for those who are living here. It is well worth taking a look if you have unanswered questions:

HELP VEGA BAJA

This is another useful organisation that provides help, support and advice for those living in Spain. You can visit their website to find out more information about their Respite Project and other benefits they offer.

Although they have a membership scheme you can benefit from many of their services without being a member. This includes their equipment hire service, which offers wheelchairs, commodes etc. The cost of annual membership is only 10€ so it won’t break the bank and entitles you to a number of discounts. Check out what they have available:

Samaritans in Spain

Samaritans in Spain is based in the Costa Blanca and is modelled on the UK version. They provide freephone helplines for English-speaking people of any age throughout Spain to talk through any problems they might have:

Age Concern, Costa Blanca Sur

Age Concern is based in Urbanisation La Siesta, Torrevieja. Their facilities include a day centre where you can borrow books, meet for a coffee or take part in one of their clubs or groups. They also stock mobility aids and provide an outreach service. For more information of what they have to offer:

And many more…

‘Torrevieja Information’ includes here a list of clubs and societies in the region that you might be interested in. The list is out of date and since the pandemic some of these clubs will no longer be available so you might have to try your own search to retrieve current contact details:

Associations, Charities, Clubs and Societies in Torrevieja and nearby areas

Perhaps you know of another organisation that provides help and support and that we could give a mention to in our newsletter. We’d also like to hear from clubs and societies that are looking for new members.
