ÁbacoClub
Launch of ÁbacoClub!

We were delighted with the turn out for our two ÁbacoClub launch events. On Monday 25th November we welcomed more than 50 people to Club Náutico in Torrevieja. Sofía Zajac introduced the new club and most of Ábaco’s staff were there to say hello too:

On Wednesday 27th a similar event was held at Hotel La Zenia in Orihuela Costa. This time around 150 people came along to hear more about ÁbacoClub and how it can help you enjoy your life in Spain even more. Both occasions were a great opportunity to enjoy a pleasant Spanish winter’s day, meeting old friends and new:

In this newsletter we will continue to keep you posted about up and coming events for ÁbacoClub members. The next one we have scheduled is a Showcooking in Torrevieja: ‘The secrets of a good paella’. There is nothing more typical in our area than a good paella and we are going to tell you our secrets and teach you how to make it from scratch.

We will meet at a little wine store we fell in love with and who's owners have a passion for wine and good cooking. Then we will go do our shopping for the ingredients we will need the traditional way: at La Plasa, a market with fresh produce and real people who attend you with a smile.

Once we have everything we need, we will go to a small celebration hall we have prepared and we will learn how to make the paella while we enjoy a beer... or two.

Who wants to come? If you still haven’t registered you can do it through your personal Ábaco Online account:

Difficult times made a little easier – our video
Difficult times made a little easier – our video

How should you prepare your inheritors for inheriting your property in Spain? In this video we explain how the inheritance process differs to that in some other countries and how you might go about making sure that the inheritance process runs smoothly for those you leave behind.

We explain that there is no automatic transfer of assets and it is important that your inheritors are prepared. There is information about the Inheritance Tax Deed and the need to seek individual advice from a solicitor:

If you would prefer to read about inheritance
If you would prefer to read about inheritance

In this article we explain how you can make your plans for inheritance. We outline some of the differences between the Spanish system and other countries and the impact that not following the correct route can have on trying to sell your property.

It’s a difficult subject but it is so important to start the conversation and make sure that your inheritors know what to expect:

Time is running out for non-resident declarations
Time is running out for non-resident declarations

The deadline for non-resident tax declarations is 31st December. In this article we explain about the taxes that non-residents must pay and why you must pay them if you don’t live in Spain. There can be penalties if you miss the deadline and we recommend that non-residents employ the services of a fiscal representative:

Are you interested in Spanish citizenship?
Are you interested in Spanish citizenship?

In this article David Ruiz of Torrevieja Translations, offers his advice if you are interested in applying for Spanish citizenship. If you have lived in Spain for more than ten years and are able to speak some Spanish then it is an alternative that might interest you:

The end of the menu del día?
The end of the menu del día?

The menu del día is a standard dining optionprovided by virtually every bar and restaurant in Spain. Even the more lucrative establishments are likely to have their special offer, albeit at a slightly higher price. The three-course menu was originally required by law and this did not change until 2010. It fitted well with the long lunch break, splitting the day for Spanish workers.

Now, however, habits are changing and so too is the popularity of the menu. Workers do not necessarily want to spend two to three hours on a lunch break and then get home late in the evening, they would prefer a shorter working day instead. The menu del día also tends not to be so profitable for those offering them and as restaurants have changed hands, so too has the offer of a cheap lunchtime meal.

The Guardian gives its take on this disappearing tradition:

Donkey ride restrictions
Donkey ride restrictions

You may or may not have subjected your children or grandchildren to donkey rides along a beach in the past. For some animal rights campaigners, using donkeys to ferry children backwards and forwards is not acceptable. But perhaps even more so when the ‘child’ could be a hefty adult.

Now, the donkey taxi service in Mijas must apply new regulations that include placing a limit on the weight of an adult using the service and a number of other animal welfare conditions that seek to ensure that the donkeys are well cared for and have their own set of workers’ rights.

For many this is an important step in the right direction. El Paìs in English provides the details:

Captivating Castles
Captivating Castles

There’s nothing like a good castle for capturing the imagination and Spain has more than its fair share of them. In this article from El País in English, we are introduced to five of Spain’s finest castles which have been selected partly because of their stunning locations.

If you are looking for a reason to travel around Spain, this selection might tickle your fancy:

Looking for places to visit?
Looking for places to visit?

Spain has a huge variety of ancient and modern towns and cities, each with their own distinctive personality. Knowing which to sample can be the biggest challenge. In this Guardian article they tell us about three ancient towns that you might visit in Andalucía, and Granada isn’t one of them!

Carmona, Écija and Osuna are each recommended for their history, architecture and museums and their relative proximity means that you can visit all three as part of your own mini tour:

Ryanair in the news again
Ryanair in the news again

How many times has Ryanair’s policy on cabin luggage changed? No, we don’t know the answer but we suspect that a doctoral thesis could be written about it, if it hasn’t been already.

What can be certain is that whatever the airline’s attempts are to squeeze more money from passengers, there will be some equally determined to find ways round them. In this article we hear about how a Spanish court has criticised the airline’s policy as well as finding out how one passenger bent the rules to take his motorbike helmet free of charge:

Best store cards in Spain
Best store cards in Spain

Although the best advice might be to avoid store cards altogether, they can be useful if handled correctly. In this article by MoneySaver Spain they write about their top five cards including the perks of each one:

Are you missing Tesco?
Are you missing Tesco?

The Food Co. is located in Puerto de Mazarrón and stocks Tesco products. It’s certainly competition for Iceland for those who don’t live too far away. You can find out about the latest offers, including their Black Friday sale, on their Facebook page.

In this article, Murcia Today covers their opening event. They’ve stocked up for Christmas and for those with the time, it could be the trigger for a day’s excursion to the region:

The Food Co. opens In Puerto De Mazarrón As Tesco Products Reach The Region Of Murcia

It’s the first Tesco brand store in Spain and there are more scheduled to open next year. It looks like one to watch if you like your traditional British food and known brands.
Vintage in Bilbao
Vintage in Bilbao

This Guardian article selects six of Europe’s best cities for vintage and retro shopping. First on the list is Bilbao and the article introduces you to the San Francisco barrio, Bilbao’s flea markets and vintage clothing shops. Something a little different on the tourist route:

A migrant with a powerful message
A migrant with a powerful message

As some countries are turning against the free movement of people and refugees and migrants are being viewed as a burden, this article reminds us of the benefits of admitting the determined and resourceful.

Kone Yossodjo is a middle distance runner who entered Spain in 2016 after leaving the Ivory Coast when his father died. Now, he is competing nationally and has as his mission; ‘I want to show the people of Spain that migrants can add to the society.’:

A run down of some Spanish fiestas
A run down of some Spanish fiestas

If you have lived in Spain for more than a year you will be familiar now with the annual festival calendar. More or less every month has its special celebration, as this Australian has discovered. Living in Galicia, their experience of village revelry might not be the same as yours, but there’s no doubt that you will see some similarities:
